My partner and I live in a really rural area that has a burgeoning queer population. The problem we've found is that so few realize the others exist! We've been talking about doing exactly this - making a zine, or a regular physical print newsletter, that can be distributed among the community to let folks know they're not alone. Thanks so much for making a great, accessible post for the hows/whys of zine-making. We cannot organize or share information solely online anymore.
I love this! I find it so interesting how experiences come back around again. I wasn't of age for previous zine booms but I assume they grew for similar reasons; censorship taking over the traditional media of the time. I see so many people expressing a desire for print, words that can be held in their hands; zines seems like a beautiful and extremely powerful way to do this. Thank you for writing this.
Your reply to the comment showed under point 6 I think was really kind, to someone who was uninformed. I don't think I would have had the restraint not to plainly tell them they were wrong and in the wrong
I am currently copying, folding, and finalizing the first Queer Love Project zine! so thrilled to share it with the world this month (and remembering how much work it is to do this project on the cheap)
Happy to see this! I was just talking with a queer mentee yesterday who mentioned their interest in starting a zine and wanted info I did not have. This will be great, and I will pass it along. Thank you!
Love this! I've been excited to see the rise of zines and have participated in it a bit myself (I have a bunch of folding to do in the next week to get ready for two events, plus I've been dropping them at Little Free Libraries). https://brightgreenfutures.substack.com/p/zines
Mine are also available online free for download, but I very much respect the idea that what's driving this is (in part) the digital surveillance state.
I want to thank you for this article (and my friend who pointed me here!) because it's helped coalesce an idea I was working on — I'm going on an extended road trip (I call Sue Walks the Earth), visiting friends, libraries, arboretums, working on my novel, and I wanted to do some kind of art project to go with it... and a collaborative zine sounds like *just* the thing. So thank you for that inspiration!

This is such a great idea! I would love to hear about how it goes. Sending you all the creative energy to make this community zine happen ✨
Thanks so much 💜 will do!

Thank you!
Thank you for sharing!! I’ve felt called to make some recently and I know exactly where I want to distribute them locally. This is my push!💖🫶

I’m so glad the piece is helpful to you and your mentee!
Yes! I just wrote this https://open.substack.com/pub/activehumanity/p/lets-get-making
This is just so beautiful. With the ways things are looking (and, to be honest, always have been) it's time to take our stories into our hands!!
